Bringing the Flow of Prana Back into the Body by Ally Cassan

Sometimes, our busy lives and hectic schedules can get ahead of us and we can start to lose that mind-body connection and our lives can start to feel off balance. This imbalance can show up in both the physical and emotional body. We can feel tired, stressed, or anxious or we may begin to have difficulty with sleep and digestion. With the added stress and exhaustion of a global pandemic, there has never been a better time to bring Yoga and Ayurveda into our lives. The key to getting balance back is to slow down and turn inwards and listen to what’s happening within. To listen for our truest nature and to feel for the subtle vibrations of our body and to strengthen the flow of Prana.

is the energetic “life force” that is within all living beings. It weaves and flows its way through our body along with a network of subtle energy channels called Nadis. Although there are hundreds of Nadi channels that make up the body, there are three main ones that are of significant importance.

1. Sushumna Nadi:  This is considered to be the single most important energy channel within the body. This central channel runs from the base of the spine up to the crown of the head.

2. Ida Nadi: This is the introverted, lunar (moon) nadi, and corresponds to the left side of the body and the right side of the brain. It is the “Yin” side that is considered to be softer, darker, more feminine, and more mysterious.

3. Pingala Nadi:  This is the extroverted, solar (sun) nadi, and corresponds to the right side of the body and the left side of the brain. It is the “Yang” side that is considered to be stronger, lighter, more masculine.

These three main energy channels criss-cross around each other and at the point where they intersect is called a Chakra. A Chakra is a whirling, spinning wheel of energy. We have seven of these that run from the base of the spine up to the crown of the head. When our energy has balanced the flow of Prana runs freely through our energy channels and through the Chakras and the body is in balance and harmony. The foods we eat, the people we come in contact with (directly or indirectly,) the stresses of our daily lives can disrupt the flow of Prana and cause the body to become imbalanced. This then leads to illness, inflammation, skin and hair issues, digestion issues, and more.

Yoga and Ayurveda work to bring balance to our energetic bodies with a series of movements, breathwork, mudras, and meditation. My focus right now is towards bringing awareness to activate, awaken, and balance these energy channels in the body. This, in turn, helps to awaken the Pranic flow of energy within you, which allows you to realign, reset and regain balance.
